Windham Fabrics introduces a new collection of vintage fabric favorites: Colonies Archives, c. 1850

JERSEY CITY, NJ. - The timeless tradition of the Colonies vintage reproduction collection continues with 60 "brand new" designs from the fabric archives of Windham Fabrics.

In a time of Bloomer suits, trimmed bonnets and tiered skirts, the fabrics of the 1850s were commonly found on quilts. Quilting bees were a major social activity for women of all social classes. Although mostly utilitarian, the quilts were one of the few ways women were able to express their creativity and show off the needlework skills. Many chose to display their handiwork at fairs.

This comprehensive collection of classic mixers, along with familiar motifs in turkey reds, double pinks (also known as cinammon pinks), Prussian blues, fugitive purples and madder browns, offers an accurate reflection of mid-19th century textiles. To round out the collection, Windham also includes contrasting blacks into the mix to add additional depth to the quilter's fabric stash.
