Windham Fabrics Introduces the "Pennsylvania Bluestone" collection by Deborah Hearn
JERSEY CITY, NJ. - Deborah Hearn found the inspiration for this collection from a quilt discovered in the attic of the Palmer Farmhouse in northeast Pennsylvania. The quilt, c. 1880, contained many fabrics of brown prints on blue backgrounds, thus the reason for the name, Pennsylvania Bluestone.
True bluestone has a cast of blue with brown staining and even today, many bluestone walls weave throughout the Palmer property, the site of the old stone quarry. In the late 19th Century, bluestones lined the outer edges of farmers' fields as boundry markers and "fences" to contain wandering livestock In many rural towns of northeast Pennsylvania, you will still find winding romantic sidewalks, gardens, gathering spots and hearths, many of which were laid over 200 years ago, and which serve to welcome both locals and visitors to beautiful countrysides and quaint communities.
The Pennsylvania collection captures the warmth of the blues and browns of the true bluestones and the beautiful stylings popular on late 19th patterns and prints. Flowers, leaves, vines and geometrics take on an essence all their own in this new reproduction and offer great promise for imaginative quilt projects and captivating works of art.
Deborah, an accomplished author, designer, editor, and teacher, has been quilting for more than 25 years and currently resides in Montrose, PA.
