Nancy Gere's New Reproduction Line for Windham Fabrics, "Rain Blossom", Draws Inspiration From Vintage Rice Paper Prints.
JERSEY CITY, NJ. - Always full of wonderful surprises, Nancy does it again with a beautiful collection of exotic prints and patterns originally inspired by intricate vintage rice paper prints of the Far East. Taking elements from wispy landscapes and watercolor drawings, Rain Blossom is an artistic interpretation of delicate Asian and European accents that artisans found most expressive when using this medium.
In Europe, around the 1900s, rice paper became a popular medium for artists, specifically calligraphers and brush painters due to its translucent appearance and sturdy durability. True rice paper actually comes from the pith of a small tree, the rice paper plant, which grows in the swampy forests of Taiwan, and is also cultivated as ornamental plant. In order to produce the paper, the boughs are boiled and freed from bark. The cylindrical core of pith is rolled on a hard flat surface against a knife, and is cut into thin sheets of a fine ivory-like texture. Rice paper is used extensively for preserving flowers and for artistic renderings.
Create a wonderful quilt story with prints reminiscent of soft, falling rain drops and swirling puddles that give way to soft buds, delicate fauna, and bursting blooms. A palette of rich, warm earth tones complete the look of this delicate, yet intricate new collection.
